Hydrogeological modeling of aquifers is the most advanced and reliable forecasting tool for quantitative and qualitative dynamics of groundwater.

Main applications

  • planning and management of the use of groundwater resources, a valuable tool for the local authorities in charge (i.e., consortia aqueduct)
  • assessing the risk of groundwater contamination
  • planning and evaluating different systems on groundwater reclamation
  • determining intrusion of saline water
  • studying the dispersion of pollutants
  • studying of geothermal low enthalpy
  • supporting planning of water projects
  • supporting the design of underground works (tunnels, galleries, quarries, mines)
  • supporting the design of excavations below the water table (e.g., underground parking)

Types of simulation

  • flow model: it is used to rebuild the direction and rate of groundwater flow and the balance between water resources both in steady and transient state.
  • model of transport: it estimates the movement of pollutants in groundwater and determines preferential ways and propagation time.
  • flow model with variable density: it allows simulating the interaction between fluids with different densities (e.g., seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers).
  • model of heat flow in saturated media (e.g., design of geothermal systems at low and medium enthalpy).

A mathematical model, in order to be considered reliable forecast phase, must be based on a good conceptual model and undergo a rigorous process of calibration and verification.

The software used is FEFLOW (Finite Element Subsurface Flow), which combines powerful and versatile calculation algorithms, to 3D graphics tools that interface with GIS and CAD files.
