Knowledge of the environment, sustainable practices to the territory

Earth's surface changes in response to geomorphic agents, such as erosive and depositional processes by running waters, rainwater or wind, marine erosion, landslides, volcanism, anthropogenic processes. Geomorphology investigates landform history and dynamics in order to identify physical ongoing processes and areas that might be subject to risk.

Main applications

  • Preliminary screening of the territory;
  • Evaluation of the main sources of risk (landslide, hydraulic risk, etc.);
  • Planning and management of land use and zoning legislation.

Aerophotogrammetric analysis

Stereo-pair images (pairs of aerial images taken from adjacent points of view) allow viewing a portion of territory with 3D-effect. The distance between the two points of recovery (depending on the scale of the images) increases the degree of vertical exaggeration (VE) of the topography, allowing the vizualization of relict forms hidden by the presence of vegetation.
Traditional photogrammetric analysis has been performed on aerial photos by means of optical stereoscopes. In recent years, digital aerial photography has been significantly developed, combining stereoscopic technologies with GIS.

Field controls

The results of the photogrammetric analysis are iteratively checked by field controls, and assessments of lithology, type and distribution of sediments, etc..

Geomorfometry

GIS methodologies allow to analyze the territory by means of numerical algorithms applied to digital terrain models (DTM or DEM). They allow elaborating several features of the investigated territory, such as energy of the relief, topographic profiles, river basins, drainage pattern, etc. The reliability of results depends on the spatial resolution of digital elevation models.
